Public Domain Disclosure: Single-Station Solar-Thermal Evaporative Desalination System
This document discloses the mechanical, structural, and thermodynamic architecture of a single-station, gravity-assisted solar-thermal desalination facility. The system utilizes natural geographic features, atmospheric pressure balancing, and dual-layer fluid dynamics to extract fresh water from a continuous saltwater source without relying on high-pressure membranes or mechanical refrigeration.
I. Structural Architecture & Spatial Footprint
A. Dual-Layer Integrated Reservoir
The station is built upon a single, consolidated footprint measuring 150 feet in length by 75 feet in width. The containment vessel is divided into two distinct functional depth zones
- Upper Heating Shelf: A shallow pan maintaining a water depth of 3 to 4 feet. The interior floor of this shelf is lined with a highly absorptive, solid black material to optimize solar radiation capture. The floor is engineered with a continuous structural tilt sloping downward toward a single collection corner.
- Lower Holding Vault: A deep reservoir measuring 12 feet in depth positioned directly beneath the upper shelf, holding a structural volume of approximately 504,900 gallons of raw saltwater. This lower mass is structurally insulated from the surrounding earth to retain thermal energy.
B. The Glass Containment Dome and Concentration Funnel
The entire dual-layer pond structure is sealed beneath a structurally reinforced glass enclosure. The geometry of the roof transitions from a broad dome at the base into a narrow, vertical chimney structure at its highest peak, comprising the top 10% of the enclosure. This upper chimney section is constructed from a rigid, black-coated, heat-absorptive material, forming a tall solar concentration funnel.
II. Fluid Dynamics & Thermodynamic Process Mechanics
A. Multi-Stage Thermal Regulation
- Primary Solar Absorption: Solar radiation passes through the glass dome and is absorbed by the black floor of the upper shelf, rapidly elevating the temperature of the shallow water layer.
- Thermal Radiator Base: The 12-foot deep lower reservoir absorbs and holds ambient thermal energy, acting as a massive heat stabilizer. It continuously radiates heat upward through the floor of the upper shelf, preventing thermal drop during nocturnal cycles or periods of low solar irradiance.
- Liquid Dispersal: High-pressure micro-nozzle rings positioned around the perimeter of the upper shelf continuously atomize pre-heated saltwater into a fine mist directly above the water line, maximizing the liquid surface area available for evaporation.
B. Atmospheric Equilibrium and Vapor Concentration
- Smart Ventilation: Motorized, sensor-controlled intake vents are integrated into the lower perimeter of the glass dome. These vents introduce ambient air at a rate that precisely balances the volume of vapor extracted at the peak, maintaining a constant zero-pressure equilibrium to eliminate structural loading on the glass.
- Convective Funnel Concentration: As fresh water evaporates from the shelf and the mist, the hot vapor rises naturally toward the peak via convection. The solar-heated black funnel compresses and superheats the rising air-vapor mixture, bringing the internal neck temperature to 170°F. At this temperature, the air reaches a saturation point where the carrier medium comprises 41% pure water vapor by volume.
C. Mechanical Extraction and Passive Geothermal Condensation
- Vapor Extraction: A high-efficiency industrial blower operating at 7,500 cubic feet per minute (CFM) draws the dense, 170°F saturated vapor directly from the neck of the concentration funnel.
- Geothermal Cooling Conduit: The blower drives the vapor into a wide-diameter, insulated transport pipeline routed directly into a naturally cool subterranean hill tunnel or wind-swept mountain pass.
- Phase Change: Contact with the geothermally cooled rock surfaces forces the temperature of the carrier air below its dew point. The water vapor undergoes a passive phase change, condensing out of the air stream as pure liquid fresh water. The dry, stripped air is vented out the terminal end of the conduit into the atmosphere.
D. Continuous Gravity-Driven Brine Separation
As pure water vapor is evacuated from the upper peak, the remaining water on the shallow shelf increases in density and salinity. This heavy, hyper-saline brine migrates down the sloped floor to the low corner drain. A automated valve directs this dense brine stream through a dedicated exit pipe leading straight out of the station to external recycling facilities, ensuring the high-salinity water completely bypasses and protects the clean 12-foot lower thermal reservoir.
III. System Integration & Gravitational Distribution
The single station leverages its elevated hillside placement to achieve completely passive downstream transit:
- The Fresh Water Harvest: Clean, liquid fresh water exiting the hill-tunnel condenser drains under natural gravity into a localized staging basin.
- The Aqueduct Confluence: From the staging basin, the fresh water drops directly into a parallel core aqueduct line flowing eastward under the local freeway corridor.
- Regional Distribution: This eastward-flowing aqueduct serves as a centralized collector channel, receiving additional gravity-fed inputs from adjacent test facilities, before routing the combined freshwater stream into the valley irrigation network for deep-root tree watering.
We are currently looking at using these pre built RO desalinization units. They provide far move fresh water for a fraction of the price.
The evaporation pond. Maybe in the future.
The black bottomed pond with glass cover is a thermal hot seawater heater.
The chimney is top 20 percent of dome and can be externally heated, is the water vapor collector.
The pipe with seawater, comes from a settling pond.
The dome lined with fine smart misters, not see, houses the evaporation area.
It has a pipe out the bottom for brine recycling.
High vacuum fan in the top extract pipe not seen.
